A brief biography of King’s life is given: he is born into a family of Baptist preachers and excels in school, entering college at the age of In graduate school he falls in love with and eventually marries Coretta Scott, a young woman sharing his ideas of equality and freedom. While serving as the pastor for the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, King becomes inspired by nonviolent protest figures and applies these methods to the lengthy Montgomery Bus Boycotts sparked in Despite the great danger to King’s life and family, the protests are successful at changing segregation laws in Montgomery, proving that similar methods could work elsewhere.

Several days later, a year old King and several other civil rights leaders form the Montgomery Improvement Association, organizing the boycott and urging members of the community to take part. The protest continues for many weeks as local police try to stymie their efforts by arresting carpoolers and hitchhikers. King remains undeterred and continues to strongly advocate nonviolent methods of protest.
King is arrested for a minor traffic violation but is charged with conspiracy in accordance with the state’s anti-boycott law.
The bus segregation law is overturned by the Supreme Court on November 13th, Oprah also shows footage from a interview with King wherein he talks about the effects of globalization and how all people are “tied by the garment of destiny” regardless of their geographical location. He also talks about how he first met his wife and about the nature of their relationship.

She discusses Dr. King’s attentiveness to both his work and their marriage, and how he always made time for her and for their children despite his busy schedule. She recounts her children asking about his absences, and she says she told them that Dr. King was one of “God’s helpers.” She also describes the great importance he placed on family life, owing to his close relationship with his own parents and siblings.
There is also a clip of King relating a somewhat humorous story about his children. While imprisoned in Birmingham in , King writes his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” noting the continual deferral of justice for African-Americans in their struggle for civil rights. Footage is also shown of King speaking out against the Vietnam War, an action which earned him vehement resistance from many groups.
